Song that Jane likes - help

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Song that Jane likes - help

Unread post by Lynx » Thu Mar 10, 2005 7:45 am

Hi

I'm trying to play Song that Jane likes at the moment, but i cant figure out how Dave plays the beginning. Honestly i doubt i can figure out how Dave plays the whole song, since i cant play the intro right.
I looked at the tabs on this site

Code: Select all

E:-2-----0---1---3-----0--
B:-3-----1---1---0-----1--
G:-2-----0---2---0-----2--
D:-0-----2---3---0-----2--
A:-------3---3---2-----0--
E:-----------1---3--------
and this is what i can hear in the song.

Code: Select all

                                   ???
E:-2-------------0----------1--(--3-----0--)
B:-3-------------1----------1--(--0-----1--)
G:-2-------------0----------2--(--0-----2--)
D:-0-------------2----------3--(--0-----2--)
A:--------3--3---3----------3--(--2-----0--)
E:-------------------1 1 1--1--(--3--------)
I just figured it out (not sure if it's correct) until the F Major chord, but i have no idea how to go on. My ears are really bad when it comes to recognising chords or notes, and my feeling for rhytmn isnt good either.

the tabs here only give you what chords to play in what order. you have to listen to the song or watch a video to get the rhythm. i'd make you an audio clip, but i'm going to work right now. if i get home and someone hasn't made one yet, i'll hook you up.

but my best advise is to just listen to that part of the song very carefully over and over with your guitar in hand. train your ear to recognize chords and get the rhythm that way.

I don't have my guitar as I am at work but I'll give it a try. You can PM after 5pm if you still need help and I can try to walk you through it.

Well, TSTJL is in 4/4 time to start with. He plays the D chord and that gets 4 beats, then he plays the C(hitting the base strings 2 then hitting all the strings) then does the same with fhe F chrod and then finally the G chord. He then plays the Am once which also gets 4 beats. Then repeats it once more before he goes into the song.

Once you are playing the song, just remember to play kind of a double bass, treble pattern throughout the song.

If you are not familiar, by bass I mean either hitting the top note or top 2 notes that are higher up on the fatter strings. Hope this helps. If I had my guitar I would probably be more help. I'm sure that's the jist of most of the song, he throws the E-A-F C slide to the D(I know its not a D major, can't remember what exact chord it is).

If you get the slides down and then the overall theme of bass, treble you will be on your way

Here is a linke to another thread were I think I did a better job of explaining it.

http://www.dmbtabs.com/boards/viewtopic ... 297#276297

Or if you are lazy like me, here it is:

I brought in the 2-17-96 version Dave & Tim at UCONN to my guitar teacher a year ago to try and perfect the rhythym. Of course Dave being a jam band person with a lose flowing style he probably doesn't play it the exact same way every time, but this is what i figured out plus what my teacher added. What he's doing at that show is play the bass strings twice then hammering the treble strings. Then the last chord in each bar Dmajsus4+9 he plays down, up, down. up.

So he starts the song: dmaj(D) (Downstroke=D, Upstroke=U) pause Cmaj(DUD), Fmaj(DUD) G(DU) pause Am(D) pause repeat.

The next progression play the top 2 strings of the chord twice and accentuate the bottom 4. So play Gmaj, Cmaj, Am, Fmaj
then the C slide to dmajsus4+9(DUDU) I believe this is in 4/4 so he is playing each chord(whether it be top 2 or bottom 4or 3) as 1/16th(3 times) notes and then plays the dmajsus4+9(4 1/16th notes)

Next he'll change and play Gmaj(top 2 strings twice accentuate bottom 4=P) then Cmaj(DUDU) then Am(P)
next line Am(DUDU) Fmaj(P) C slide to dmajsus4+9(DUDU) and he pretty much repeat this process throughout that perfromance.
He has one more alteration: when he says "play the days.....Keep scribbling themselves in tidy lines"

Em(P) Em(DUDU) Am(P) Am(DUDU) Fmaj(P) dmajsus4+9(DUDU)

When he does the down up down up he doesn't it pretty fast. I hope this helps you out. Since I am at work, I am working completely from memory, but if you get down the concept of playing bass string that accentuating the treble strings you will be going in the right direction. If you have any more questions about this song you can PM me.

Maybe try and get your hands on a Dave & Tim live version so it's easier to hear exactly what's going on the rhythym and chords versus DMB with all the other instruments being played.

here man, i had problems with the intro a while ago too as well as the whole song. I have been playing for about 5 months now.. but i kept listening to the dave and tim version of it over and over again to get a better idea of how the song was played.. i finally got it so here is the intro

Code: Select all

E:-2--------0-(1)(1)(1)(1)--1------3-----0--
B:-3--------1-(1)(1)(1)(1)--1------0-----1--
G:-2--------0--2--2--2--2---2------0-----2--
D:-0------2-2--3--3--3--3---3------0-----2--
A:-------3-(3)-3--3--3--3---3------2-----0--
E:-------------1--1--1--1-1-1--3-3-3--------
   D DD D D U D U D D D D D D

The (1)'s and the (3) simply mean optional.. however on the last F (133211) play the whole chord. Also you can SKIP the first Downstroked F if you want and start on the Upstroke F, but still do a downstroke for the first F and just dont hit it. Sorry if this tab sucks, this is my first tab i made, but let me know if you have any questions.. its done fast like all the F's are done pretty fast, but just listen to the song :D
and all the little ants are marching..
