So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

the best tip i can give is practice, it'll come in time. When i wanted to play this song for my friends but couldnt be sure i was gonna nail the stretch and just wanted to be able to flow, i would go from the Emaj (022100) to that E chord like the one from crash (4x2400). this way you still get the solid B from both the g and b strings, and u've still got the bass-ey Ab. to be honest i still use this chord most the time cuz i feel my voice flows better over this change, and im not gonna lie, that stretch is a bitch. but again, practice and you'll get there, took me a long as time, but learning spoon helped reinforce that stretch since its at a slower rhythem n speed. good luck man, peace...

How about 4x2100. That should free up the pinkie.

022400

and

422400 is how I play it. Barring the notes on the 2nd fret with the index, and using the pinky on the 4th fret of the G string.

Once again, use a capo if you need to to help build tolerence to stretching.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

I did that until my fingers felt right. From experience, this will not hinder your stretching to do 422100, but help your fingers get used to that stretch.
