dave's style of strumming

Unread post by Mindsmoke » Sun Mar 02, 2003 9:13 pm

I've been playing for a couple years without any lessons, and have reached a wall in my progress, particularly strumming. Although i've seen many of dave's live shows at The Gorge in WA State, i've never gotten close enough to really view his playing. I know his songs well, but for the life of me i can't figue out how he strums like he does. Oviously tabs can't convey this info well. Any insight on this mystery would be greatly appreciated. Also, do you know of any DMB dvd's with camera's zoomed on him playing the whole time? Or any site with vids of dave playing?

Enlighten me

I am currently working on a huge project that will allow you to see strumming........it will be a while(couple months) but it will be 100% worth it when it's done....everyone here will be getting previews of what is going on also....peace

anyone care to explain how better to learn dave's style of strumming? for instance, the Crash intro. i've got the bass down (the easy part), but after each bass note, the strumming on the D,G,B strings sounds to me like:

down(pause), up, down,up, down

goddamn hard to do consistently/evenly, at least for this learner. how do you learn to to do it without breaking your hand practicing that viscous chord spread for hours?

any other insight for generally practicing and learning dave's strum style? i'm sure someone must have some good advice.

I don't have a guitar on me right now(will have my new Martin in about 3hrs) but I believe crash goes

Down(pause), Down, Up, Down, Up THEN
Down(pause), Down, Up, Down

I believe that's right, but I'm not positive without a guitar...anyway, good luck...just keep at it and listen and watch the video's on this site...peace all

i know this is kind of off topic, but i love the pic, mindsmoke, i tried to get a nice bud pic on my name, but it fucked up, could you give me a tip on how to get mine working, it seems my idea was thought of by another, and i was beaten to the punch due to the fact i couldnt get it loaded in time, great pic, i would appreciate some advice on how you got your bud pic to show up, the one i tried to load just shows up as an X

Strumming

Unread post by CPTino3001 » Mon Mar 03, 2003 1:22 pm

Here's my strumming pattern...

Bass, Down (Pause), Down, Up
Bass, Down, Up, Down, Up
...repeat...

Kinda difficult to sing w/ but it sounds extremely accurate...

I found a kindof scary/funny pic of the WTC on 9/11. It has smoke all over and the caption says something like "Mayor Giuliani legalized marijuana today."

It is pretty bad, but I found it useful because at the time that I saw it, I was doing a report on the legalization of marijuana.

why would you have to do a report on that?

I think they should legalize it. It'll probably be legal in Canada before too long.

on the strumming stuff: just find the beat of the strumming by tapping along w/ your foot or whatever. then try to match it up w/ your hand, then put a guitar infront of it. i had a real hard time w/ figuring out strumming. i eventually gave up and just strummed what sounded right (or close). w/ time though youll figure out whats goin on. i hated upstrokes but now i find myself using them more than downstrokes. sadly this guitar crap takes time!
