for those who dont use a pic

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

recently ive been playing without one because i think its a lot easier. i have a lot more control without one. but ive noticed ive been having trouble getting the speed down. i was wondering if you sometimes have to use a pic for certain songs or if you have some method of getting the speed down for it?

I have to agree with you - some songs are just better off and easier to play without a pick. Speed will definitely come with time and practice. Another thing to try is, if you don't need to use your middle finger, strum a song with a pick and then boost up the pick and hold it in your middle finger. This allows one to finger pick with four fingers. Pretty efficient for me.

I suppose it is more difficult to explain than I thought. Of course all fingers can bend in 3 places. From the outside in, place the pick in between the first and second joint, and then bend your finger and hold it in place. Although awkward at first, It has become very natural to me.

my thumb only bends in 1 place. And the thumb is technically a finger.

I have mentioned this before but putting my pick down and using my fingers was the greatest decision I have made in playing guitar. I know the majority of people use picks effectivly, but I personally always got frustrated with them.

It takes awile to become good using just fingers to strum. I remember having difficulty getting a loud tone playing with fingers but practice does make perfect. I use my thumb and index finger mainly, thumb for upstrokes and index finger for downstrokes. As for speed I try to hold my thumb and index finger as closely together without touching, as if you are holding a pick. I good song to practice I think for speed using just fingers is "Two Step."

I play without a pick a lot because usually I'm too lazy to go look for one. and I can never freakin' find any. but I started foolin' around without a pick soon after I saw Dave play Everyday on A Tribute To Heroes benefit. I use my thumb for the bass notes and my index, middle, ring for the other strings, depending on what the song is.
good, and you?

I play with the figers exclusively. when I first started playing the guitar, I didn't like the sound a pick made and so just went fingers all the way.

Whenever I need to play something fast, I will place my middle and index fingers on one string and pluck it rapidly with my middle finger then index finger (repeat as needed). It felt a little unnatural at first, but now its second nature and I can do some pretty fast stuff on one string. In fact, whenever I play solos, I do that exclusively. If I need to go down a string I use my thumb, and my ring finger for moving up a string

If you want to get some good fingerpicking exercises, the verse riffs for Rhyme and Reason and The Stone are good, and if you wanna work on speed, try doing Tim's super fast outtro on the album version of Dancing Nancies.

I play with both. In songs where I need to do both really quick i just roll the pick under my second finger and bend my finger and leave it there untill i need it. It creates some pretty cool effects if you can transfer it quickly.

I use my thumb and index finger sometimes when I feel like it but I dont think it really sounds as good without a pick, it just doesnt ring out as loud and sharop. Plus some songs you need a pick, like the stone, I couldnt play that without a pick, I dont think its possible.

hehehe I play the Stone sometimes without a pic. It is possible, it just has a softer sound to it and its not as easy to make mistakes.

Yeah but when I play it I use alternative picking and play a lot of notes, maybe to many real fast, how do you get your finger to play those quick notes?
