Tripping billies - Storytellers..this lil effect they do....

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Tripping billies - Storytellers..this lil effect they do....

Unread post by Jonny B Good » Thu Feb 27, 2003 9:50 pm

Right after the third verse (we are all sitting..), into the chorus, about 2:45 into the song, they do this little effect right after dave sings "so whhhhyyy would you care"

I'll explain further...right after singing this line in this part of the song, they proceed, obviously, into the:

e:------------------------
B:------------------------
G:----2--4-4---7---6----
D:------------------------
A:------------------------
E:-----2--3-3---7----5---

during this part, there's a small element that is added that's not in any other part of this song, or on any other version for that matter. It's tough to describe...much easier to hear...but it sounds as thought this particular riff has some extra"pop" or "kick" to it than all the rest of the same riff. It almost sounds like maybe tim is playing some muted strings just like .25 seconds before dave hits those chords...?!?

I dunno...i hope someone has heard this...or atleast tell me that I'm not crazy and tell me what I'm hearing. I picked up on it right away...it's so small, but yet so outstanding to my ears...i dunno.

If anyone knows what I'm referring to....you know what these two crazy kids are doin on the gitters here????

I think the simple explanation is "Tim being Tim."

It sounds like he is doing some wicked hard upstroke muting... I unfortunately can't verify this because I leant my videos to a friend and all I have is the audio.

After hearing that version of the song, though, I've started to play the chorus with a *very* hard upstroke, it adds a very nice shuffle kinda sound to it.

Of course, I could be totally wrong, but if I am, I blame it on not having the video.

haha....good one  You might be right though...i have the audio and video as well - the video doesn't help..i think i've looked a million times to try to see what timmy was doing but I think the camera is on dave during that part  [/quote]

oh..and when you say playing with an upstroke - are you referring to the set of chords i put in the tab above in my earlier post? I mean, i usually just hit these once since it's such a fast transition between them...and downstroke is the only thing that would work for me

Well, the way I see it, if youre gonna strum down, it only makes sense to hit the strings when youre bringing it back up... ya gotta do it fast to make it sound rhythmic, though.
