you guys use thumbs

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

you guys use thumbs

Unread post by djs488 » Wed Feb 26, 2003 10:02 pm

i was just wondering how many people can use their thumbs to fret a note on the low E string. I can't, but I wish I could so i could play a bunch of mayer songs (u dont really need it for dave) I try to make do, but its so much harder not being able to.

I do, I think it make some songs a lot easier. Like playing this chord on Panatla: 354x3- and it helps when playing all the Mayer songs that he does it in.

only experimented on my own songs. it hurts my thumb and i can't fret the cords cleanly enough to get a good sound so i just run away from songs (read 'Mayer's songs') that call for this.

I've been using my thumb a lot lately, cause I've been practicing some Mayer stuff. I never use my thumb for Dave stuff but its cool to use it sometimes for something different. you can hit some cool different chords when you use your thumb for the bass note.
good, and you?

i feel that using your thumb for the bass notes opens up your other fingers to throw some fills/notes on higher strings. so with that being said, i use my thumb quite often.

Yea, D/F# i use it on. Also sometimes on WWYS I use it. But I've been switching the past couple days to play it without the thumb. It's more comfortable to play.

Old name that stuck with me. When I was 14 I took a few flights lessons, but it got too expensive.

Now here's something awesome, I know this guy who is 21, he has 1500 hours, CFII, helocopter instructor, glider rating, multi-engine instructor, i think, he owns a couple planes and a helocopter. He figures the only two planes he couldn't fly without just adding a type rating are a Harrier jump jet and the V-22 Osprey (VTOL). Pretty amazing to do by the time you are 21 years old.
