Just pick what feels most comfortable for you ya know , you don't have to do everything like everyone else .... Do what feels the most comfortable for you instead , it'll make it easier on you .... And later on in time , you might start playing it differently ....

agreed, i find myself doing D D U D-U D-U-D, feels better for me to be landing an upstroke on the F since i'm going up from G to D string anyways while BigSpeen plays it

I've carefully watched dave in a lot of different videos and he does not play it the same every time. Sometimes he plays D D D D U D U D U, while I have seen other times where he has used alternate picking from the beginning.
I myself switch it up as well depending on my mood...downstrokes give a heavier attack (plus I can add some heavier palm muting)....alternate picking can be more delicate.
Guess I agree with the others....do what feels good to you.

Yes i've always wondered about the tab here and what i hear , so i play the D string at the second fret twice in the end , with the last pick as an upstroke , that is what i hear it as :)

I think I do the same thing except that 9th note I actually just mute a string.

Actually the tab here is correct....the 9th note you are talking about is just the beginning of the repeat...i.e. the D note played on the A string (5 on A).......it just loops around, and it is correct not to show that note at the end.

I don't have a guitar here with me but im pretty sure Im picking it in a D U D U progression through out it. No matter what this song takes some practice to get down.

move your hand rhytmically, then the bold type (numbers) represents downstrokes and the italics (ands) are upstrokes

1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and (the verse is in 6/8 timing)

becomes.... (D is a downstroke, U is an upstroke, "ands" and numbers are no stroke)

D and D and D and D U D U 6 U

I'll be here all week...be sure to tip your waitress... :D
