Question About Sugar Will

Unread post by Lexington Steele » Tue Aug 03, 2004 9:34 pm

WHERE THE HELL DID HE GET THAT FROM! Is that based around some type of scale or something. It actually isn't that hard to play, just kinda craps up the pinky after a while, but its basiclly the same fingering all over the neck. So is it some type of scale? I think its clever and hopefully there will be more songs like that to follow. Seems like he is bringing in some new ideas with the exception of joyride which is the result of rapunzel, some devil, and a bottle of brandy.

well, the verse of it is based off of the F, Am, C and Bb chords.. the pre-chorus is F, D, G, E.. and the chorus is just Dm, C, G, Dm

not sure if you know much about theory, but for the most part chords are made up of 3 notes: the first (or root), third, and fifth. so, for instance, an Am chord is made up of the first, third and fifth notes of the Am scale (ie, A C and E). those three notes are basically what dave is playing around with for Sugar Will, with an occasional "second" thrown in.

for instance, the first measure of the verse, based around an F chord, is

Code: Select all

e----------------------
b----------------------
g----------------------
d-7----10----7-10----7-
a-8-10-8--10-8-8--10-8-
E----------------------
and the actual notes that are being played are

Code: Select all

-----------------
-----------------
-----------------
-a---c---a-c---a-
-f-g-f-g-f-f-g-f-
-----------------
like i was saying about the first, third and fifth.. an F chord is made of an F, A and C. so every time you see F and A being played at the same time, or F and C being played at the same time, that's really just a piece of an F chord. the occasional "second" dave throws in (G, in this case) is just to break up the pattern (which, as you can tell, is pretty repetitious). every measure of the song (except for the pre/post-chorus) is exactly the same, a combo of the first/third and first/fifth, broken up with the second, with the notes determined by which chord the measure is based on.

wow, i didn't think talking about that song would take so long :)

Hey thanks alot adwolf, that makes some sense. Yeah, i know nothing about theory. I'd love to learn though but it just seems so overwhelming. Any suggestions (software, books, . . . ). Thanks again.
