hmm...that a bit vague(sp?) but i'm pretty sure he doesn't in crush
i think the only chord i've seen dave use his thumb for is a D chord with an F# root
2X0232

even when playing D/F#, he usually does 2x023x using his 1,2,3 fingers. he does that in crush, although its a D/E because its in drop D tuning.

i think he plays 2x023x. i don't think he uses his thumb. like in PNP and say goodbye. but just cause dave doesn't use his thumb, it doesn't mean its wrong. 2x0232 sounds more full.

Dave sometimes does use his thumb on D chords.

When he plays a full open D, like the chorus of Jimi Thing or the chorus of Granny:

x00232

he uses his thumb on the bass string so you are doing this:

200323

On Crush, no, he doesn't do that, because he doesn't touch the high E string. I know he does use his thumb on songs, 100% correct. Check out Listener Supported.

He does on jimi thing.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

He uses it to play the F# bass note for that D chord. Watch both LS and CP and you'll see it.
