The Genesis of DMB/DM songs
Dave is essentially a self taught guitarist, his style has been the subject of many conversations, arguments even. His percussive style has been often imitated.
Have you noticed the chord pool that Dave draws from when writing songs if often the same. Meaning he uses the same chords, however changes the ryhthm and creates a fresh, new song.
I was looking at So Damn Lucky and noticed the main riff is very close to Jimi Thing, and the chorus is sort of an updated What Will Become of Me with similar lyrics and the same chords.
Do any of you consider What Will Become of Me to be the inspiration for So Damn Lucky?
Any other instances in Dave's songs that you would like to point out, please do.

Re: The Genesis of DMB/DM songs
WWBoM doesn't sounds like so damn lucky's chorus in my opinion. and Jimi Thing is totally different then so damn luck in my opinion as well.. they are similar as in they both have a 9h11 thing in it, but that's itc_tietze wrote:Dave is essentially a self taught guitarist, his style has been the subject of many conversations, arguments even. Yeah, I'm not disagreeing or anything like that. I just don't see TOO much of similarity between those songs. Although I can see what you're saying about Jimi Thing resemblence. As for the chorus, maybe the melody is somewhat like WWBoM, but the chords are Grey St. and Billies (with a couple others of course.

I'll try to let you inside the mind of a mad man (me). Lol.
If you take the riff from SD:
E:----------------------------
B:----------------------------
G:-9h11--9--11--9--11--9--11--
D:-9------9--x----9--x---9--x---
A:-9h11--9--11--9--11--9--11--
E:-0------0---0---0--0---0--0---
E:--------------------------------
B:--------------------------------
G:-9h11----9--11--9--11--9--11
D:-9h11----9--11--9--11--9--11
A:-0--------0--0---0--0---0--0--
E:---------------------------------
look at this part in Jimi:
E:------------------------------------------
B:---------------------------9------9------
G:----------------------x---9------9-------
D:------------9-----9--x---9h11--9-------
A:------7-----9h11--9-x------------------
E:-7h9--------9----------------------------
I'm referring to the 9h11 and the 999h11 parts
And the lyrics in SDL are like this (sic) Oh my God, wait and see
What will soon become of me? This is nearly the same lyric from the D&T live classic, What Will Become of Me.
SDL also utilizes the chord progresion:
--------------0----0
8---3---1----2----0
x---x---0----2----0
5---4---2----2----2
7---5---3----0----2
-------------------0
The first few chords are nearly identical to What Will Become of Me.
Ah, it's a stretch I know. Just thought it was a little to easy and too similar sounding in places.
It's still refreshing that Dave can use the same chord base and still create new songs.
Peace,
CJT

I do agree with you about the style of the breakdown, the usual Dave two fretted notes, two muted notes ala Billies. This seems to be a Dave staple.whip3512 wrote:Yeah, I'm not disagreeing or anything like that. I just don't see TOO much of similarity between those songs. Yeah, Dave does do things like that, sometimes a lot. Also, the reason why the songs that you are talking about, esentialy, don't sound the same, which is the point, the starting point is the same for many songs, but the road he takes with them makes them so different
hence and easy example is Bartender vs DDTW. The core begining of writing these, they were really together, and branced out, and became two completely different songs.
now, I don't agree with the chorus of SDL with WWBOM, but the verse to the verse in Jimi Thing, I saw that myself.
Another one is the Last Stop and What You Are, they both have the same feeling, and similarites on how they are played (mainly octaves moving up and down the bottom strings, or close), yet they are different songs int he end.
Yeah, um, yeah

Good points all around the board. Nice chatting about this w/you folks. It's like a different world over here. Lol.
I really like listening to older DMB and making connections to newer/studio releases. Sort of a 6 degrees of seperation for DMB tunes.
Peace,
CJT

Dude, I know what you mean. I got sick and tired of the overabundance of negativity on "some other" website's boards. People here are pretty alright and you won't find that "high-and-mighty" attitude. Nice to have you around manc_tietze wrote:Good points all around the board. Nice chatting about this w/you folks.
