How do I get the D string to STFU while I'm playing the verse for Grey Street?

the d ringing out is definitely okay
i actually tune my high e down to a d often times when i play this song to get another d in there because i don't have a 12'er

I always thought that Dave left it ringing most of the time. On Billies, Too Much, Hold Me Up/Down, So Damn Lucky, and other songs with those types of chords, as well as my own, I always let the D string ring, it adds fullness, and the way the chords are played, I think it sounds fine.
