You're going to get skewed opinions here, and everyone else's opinion means squat. Go to the nearest store with both of them, play them, and decide which one you like more.

714, ifve played both, but the expressions push the taylor over the edge imo, but, a really high quality martin is hard to pass up

I agree that the ES is phenomenal, but a Martin with a nice Fishman or B-Band system with a DI box can beat it.

I've played 'em both, and I liked to the Taylor, but definitely play it before you buy it.

do the blind test with them, let the feel and the sound decide for you and not the brand name.

theyre completely different guitars with completely different feels and sounds... i would never say that either is better than the other. my three favorite guitars are the regular 714ce with the cedar top, HD-28v, and the Gibson Hummingbird. I cant say that any of them is better than the others, i like them each for different reasons.

I tried them all, and plugged in (with no needed extras) the 714 ES is amazing. I bought it. I do like martins though. Either way, they're both good guitars. My advice... get both!

I've got an HD28 as well as a 414Rce (Rosewood). They are two totally different sounds. Much like comparing a Les Paul to a Strat. For playing around the house I go for the HD28. When I play with a band, you cant beat the Taylor. The ES does NOT feedback no matter what and Taylors seem to fit into the mix well. It depends really on how you are going to use it.

Both are great guitars and you really can't go wrong with either one. Play them side by side, take the one home that speaks to you.

PS: Play as many examples of each model as you can. I sat in a guitar shop deciding between 3 HD28's for 2 hours. They were very different despite being the same model.
