I think we need to differentiate between better guitarist and better musician. One is clearly a matter of proficiency, technical skill, and other things (I dont know the full measure of a good guitarist since I dont claim to be one...yet
). But being a better musician is more of a combination of the above with aesthetic pleasure, which can be argued until the end of time. Look at Thelonius Monk. Not the most "technically proficient" pianist ever, in fact his style has even been described as "sloppy". Yet he is hailed as one of the great jazz musicians of his time (and maybe all time). It's pretty clear to me that John is a more technically skilled guitarist, and thats fine. That's not a comparison between the two as songwriters, singers, the total package. To argue who is better overall is futile, since the fact that we are posting here gives us a de facto bias. We're all on these boards because we love Dave's music. Many of us also enjoy Mayer's music (at least I do). To say Mayer is a better guitarist is (in my opinion) true, hands down, but it seems people want to use that as a measure of who is the better musician. That, to many, is a title reserved for Dave Matthews, for the time being.
