Pop is not short for popular. Pop is pop.
It began as an art movement, first brought into the light by Andy Warhol, and didn't incompass any sort of defineable musical genre until the late 80's. Good god, Frank Sinatra was pop! There's nothing wrong with pop; just manufactured music a la Backstreet Boys.
