So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Em and G major are the same key, your friend should know that
Not quite.

They do incorporate the same notes, but they are used differently. They are not the same.
they have the same notes, thats all he needed to know, i didn't feel like talking about tone resolution and just end up confusing him...

you see one sharp in the key sig, its G. and guess what! its also Em! derp da der...
AMEN!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. I need to add some extra edge to my paltry knowledge of guitar theory.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

while it may seem like a worthless technicality to some, i think that it's very useful to state that there is in fact a difference between Em and G, or any major key and it's relative minor. saying that they're closely related is not difficult at all to understand, thus the watering down isn't neccessary and actually might end up causing more confusion in the long run.

don't take them down or anything. im going to dl them when i get home.

well tico, i do understand that there is a difference btw the two. while i don't know exactly what that difference is yet, i understand that there is one. but when someone starts going extreme advanced on me like some of those guys did, that's when i get confused. id rather learn this stuff at my own pace so i know what im doing is correct.

That's exactly what I'm talking about, App. That you know that there is a difference is important at this level. Knowing the technicalities of why there is a difference doesn't really matter to most people.

it isn't really that it doesn't matter. if i could i would learn everything about theory that i could. but it doesn't come natural to me. i mean, im a pretty bright guy, i make good grades and im not a dumbass (even though i can't spell) :D . but for some reason, its just harder w/ this stuff. i guess its cause i never had a real teacher and im teaching myself.

but anyway, i guess my question is, how much should i learn. how much do i need to know? how much is too much?

it'd be easier to show them the patterns than each individual one...

oh i figured the whole learning the notes of the fretboard thing was a different lesson. http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~schmeer/XLGUITAR.XLS

that's a program with all the patterns. i was shooting for more of a know your fretboard and use it as a quick reference type thing eith the other ones. just knowing patterns is good but nowhere near as helpful as knowing the notes. it's like reading. you gotta learn your ABC's before you get into spelling and grammar.

are the chords sheet helpful. that way you can look at the chords in a song and pick out the key, then go to the scales sheet and know which notes to play.
