i'm not all that familiar with exactly how Dave plays these type of chords, but it occurred to me that dave may play these chords the way he does because they're abbreviated versions of fuller chords, so he may finger them the way he would play the larger chord even though he's only playing the E and G strings.

e------- ----
B------- ----
G---4--- --4--
D---x--- --5--
A---x--- --x--
E---3--- --3--

e------- ----
B------- ----
G---6--- --6--
D---x--- --7--
A---x--- --x--
E---5--- --5--

e------- ----
B------- ----
G---7--- --7--
D---x--- --x--
A---x--- --5--
E---7--- --7--

on Billies, i find it easy enough to simply use my index and middle fingers for all these chords. but i prefer to add the 3x54 and 75x7 for a fuller sound. if dave plays the 7xx7 with ring and pinky, it would make sense, cuz that's the setup as if he were 75x7.

the index/middle finger method makes it easy to add the ring finger to the D string (if playing the fuller chord), then switch back to the 2xx2 or 7xx7. and my index finger mutes all other strings. make any sense? it does to me

i find that the more different ways you can learn to play a song, the better off you are in the future...obviously we all want to play like dave, but learning other finger positions 'in addtion' to learning his will expand your skill that much more and improve you in the long run...just my two cents
