playing guitar for about 8 months

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

well like i said ive only been playing 6 months but i'd say that almost every day i play for a couple hours at least... all semester i'd do a homework problem, play guitar for 10 minutes, do a homework problem, play for 10 minutes... eventually i had to get the hell out of my apartment to do homework because i could never get anything done, always playing guitar

practice practice practice
I know what you mean man. Trying to write a paper with your guitar in your hands is definitely a hard task... Playing guitar has almost turned into a bad habit for me. But it's my senior year of high school and I already know where I'm going next year so it doesn't really matter anymore. But, when I take my guitar to college, thats gonna be challenging. How do you guys pull it off????

I just finished my second year of college and let me say if youre living in dorms you cannot study in your room. All I did when I tried studying in my room was put on Dave and listen to it more than study. Than a song song would come on and Id just have to play along with it. Then the song would end and Id study for a little while longer. Then Id end up hopping on the internet to see some new posts on this message board and to write a few of my own. Believe me, you just gotta get away from the distractions and study down in the lobby or study hall or something.

just took my last final of soph. year this morning :D

last year i always used to study in my room, i never saw a reason to go anywhere else because i could reasonably stay on task... Then this year i lived in an apartment instead of a dorm, and my classes got about 10 times harder... i basically lived in the library for a large part of the year. I never once used any library resources, i just went there to have a place that i could focus on my work- i would just bring a few mellow cds and listen while studying, i think i pulled off a halfway decent GPA this year, classes were INSANE though.... no more math EVER!!!!! hahahahaha

WORD

i just finished freshman yr of college and i can totally relate! my god. if i put on loud dave music when studying in my dorm room i would just sing along or play along!! yyiikkes not good for studyin. and if i made it through that i would definitely just go to this site and check the boards..lol oh man it was bad.

as for the topic of this thread...

i can totally understand anyone who says they can play every dave song after only 8months cause i definitely could have done that. i have been playing for 11months now and can play about 30 or so. the reason i can't get em all is that i dont move on to another song till i can play AND sing it rather well...well enough to play out.

as of right now i can do...#41...jimi thing ... AATW ... OSW ... Nancies ... Warehouse... billies... hmm the list goes on to about 12 total singing and playing.. with that and college (which can kill ur progress cause you have no time if you play a sport) i think i would have been able to just "play" all of them.

hmm all this talk almost makes me sick...if i saw this post i'd be like "prove it buddy!" errr i will..i need to find out how to put songs up here..hmmm

*thinks*

8 months?

Unread post by JaDaRu » Wed May 14, 2003 11:08 am

I've only been playin for 6 but am no where near that. I still have trouble with chord changes. Maybe its because I'm really busy (high school student, sports, etc...) or maybe its because I can't focus on one song at a time. But 30 + Dave songs done well in your first 8 months? How much do you practice? I'd like to be able to say I can do the same, so give me some advice!

Thanks,

Jason

well, because i just moved home on sunday, and we are remodeling our house, plus i have to unpack, yesterday i did not touch my guitar at all. but, this is the first time that has happened since probably october. my guitar was probably sitting there like "what the hell man?" yesterday. anyway, i play a LOT. there are days where i guess i'd play about 6 hours. 2 of my roommates play, so i play along with them, and also a lot by myself.

once you can put a song together, play along with the CD to get used to playing the whole thing all the way through in time. the first song i did this with was captain, but once you do one, the next ones get easier to where now i can play along with almost entire albums. just keep chalenging yourself. the day i learned warehouse, i did not think "i'm gonna perfect warehouse today," i thought "this is gonna sound like shit, absolute shit (it still does :P ), but i'm gonna do it anyway."

things start to click and learning songs gets easier. i have one 'click' left, which is singing, and i can't wait for it to start working...

i tend to ramble a lot, but i'm gonna stop now because a large bird is beating the hell out of itself by repeatedly flying into my front window. i should probably do something...

the procedure i went through was (quickly) this:

1. learned major open chords from a friend and practiced chord progressions with them for a month. (had no rhythm whatsoever..my hand would not move between strums. hahaha)
practice time: about 2hours a day

2. got lessons. half hour. once a week. by the time i got to these lessons i could already switch nicely between standard chords...and could "barely" pull off a 133211 bar chord. this is when i started to learn dave songs... "typical situation" then "what would you say" then "jimi thing"..
-----it took me one week to "learn" each of these songs. (i mean "learn" by my left hand. my right hand is still a work in progress to this day)
practice time: about 4 hours a day

3. after like 6 lessons i started going to the old dmbtabs.com with the audio clips. that was still back last summer. that place ruled. this place is better jkanter! hehe
....during this time i learned like 6 other songs...like AATW...and Satellite riff...and #41...warehouse...ones that really stretched the Sh%t out of my hand. oh crash too. after this time..about 3months..i had rhthym in my rand hand finally. (due alot to lessons)
practice time: about 4 hours a day

4. then at college i learned the remaining like 20 or so. give or take. i forget.
practice time: about 1-2 hours a day...but sometimes none ..damn school work

now i'm here and learning like a crazy psycho playing about 6-7 hours a day cause its summer.

hope that helps

add 1+2+3+4 and you get 30 dave songs! hehehe

now singin' em..thats another story

Is there a method to the madness?

Unread post by JaDaRu » Wed May 14, 2003 11:40 am

Or do you just pick a song and play it over and over. I guess I'm looking for ways to improve my overall guitar skills while learning some amazing songs passably well.

Great info Corona...I hope I can learn at that pace. I have a friend that is teaching me and we hook up every other week after I've practiced certian things on my own.

good job man. keep it up.
i'm at 11 months. practice practice practice..

OH one MAJOR thing that i forgot to say!

I hardly ever ever ever learn a dave song without getting a video of it first. i have BOTH LS and Folsum DVDs...and a whole sht load of videos and Downloads. this helps TREMENDOUSLY.

oh and one other thing..about singing a song..

---if you can't play the song effortlessly and without thinking...don't expect to be able to sing and play it well. you can't think too hard about both at once. if you just sing the song ..like sing along on the radio or ur CD with it...GAURENTEED that you will sing it waaay better than when singing and playing it urself. thats cause you have to "think" about playing it too. well, if you don't have to think about it, you'll be able to sing it alot better.

yessum
