So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

The thing is, I get all mixed up with te pick, and seem unable to strum correctly. I know it's not the same, but I let my nails grow (specially the thum and index ones) and i use that for a pick; if my nails aren't long enough it's definately a hard bussines to play dave stuff.

I can't play warehouse with a pick (for instance), seriously, I just can't upstrum with it...I lose a lot of sensitivity with one.

And I always thought (until this post) that dave didn't use one as well, being the strum-man he is.

i didn't know how to use a pick too...i couldn't even hold one
but my teacher showed me the proper way to hold it and in like 3 weeks i was playing with a pick...it's easier on your nails and fingers if you use a pick on strumming songs

it just takes some time to get used to it

Like someone said, I believe Dave uses a pick on the majority of his songs in concert. I think, as well a very large amount in studio.

As for playing with a pick, I know I do it a bit weirder than most I know. I normally, the pick will hardly touch the strings when I play. The way I hold the pick between my thumb and index finger, I nearly cover the thing completely up. I'm playing more with my finger-nails than anything. It's just more comfortable to keep the pick there, as well as it makes it easier to switch to a song that I need to single pick notes, then jump to strumming.

Maybe you should try that? Holding the pick so that it's more or less just holding it, not playing with it. I think after a while it'd be easier for you to play actually USEING the pick.

To each his own with pickstyle...your technique will evolve with your abilities up to a certain point because your abilities will be hampered or flourish because of your technique.

Can you buy the custom DMB picks or is it just for Dave and the band?
