that's exactly what I do. I couldnt do the stretch for the life of me, then I started kind of cocking my wrist like that and using the sides of my fingers to hild the notes.Kukini wrote:cock the wrist man. A good way to start getting those fingers to stretch out is, obviously, to practice them doing the songs discussed in this thread. Take a hard stretch from any of these songs and just hold it for a while. Hold it until it becomes right before unbearable. It's just like making any other part of your body flexible, you have to stretch until it's uncomfortable and hold it. Pretty soon you'll be able to reach past your toes or, in this case, past your 6 fret stretch.

when I have my capo on, I somoetimes play Crash with it on the [1-2-3] frets. It doesn't sound that off and it doesn't cramp me up. It's pathetic that I have been playing that song for almost 10 years and I still cramp up on the second verse.
I've never had a problem with that chord because it's used in the WWYS jam & WWBOM which I learned along time ago. Crash still cramps me though.czech wrote:that's exactly what I do. Captain kills my hand. That song is just one big exercise on how to tear the tendons in your hand and give yourself arthritis 20 years down the road. I don't dare play this until I have been playing for an hour or so and my hand is completely warmed up.
Warehouse kills my thumb(I don't know why). I can get through warehouse a couple of times but after that my thumb will be shot.
#41, Crash and Satellite haven't bothered me for a long time.

Crash, #41 amd satellite are really never a problem, but the intro and verse for tripping billies is ridiculous sometimes. like mlb1399 said earlier you just need to play for an hour to warm up you hand before attempting some of dave's songs

Lay the side of your strumming hand, right below your pinky, on the very end of the strings past the hole where they enter at the nuts/saddle. When you do this your should be picking the strings also before the soundhole and it should give you quick muted sound, dave is pretty inclined to play this way with most of his songs.

me too man, that way sounds so much better IMObriguy945 wrote:I've been playing the #41 with all the open chords kind of like Howie Day's version. I think it sounds a lot better if you're the only one playing. Combining the two is sweet.

Thanks. So I lay the side of my hand against all the strings or just certain ones? Sorry, but I've rarely ever used palm muting and I'm very inexperienced with it.dmfollower wrote:Lay the side of your strumming hand, right below your pinky, on the very end of the strings past the hole where they enter at the nuts/saddle. Also, I've never seen the tab for the Howie Day version. Where can I find it?
there is a way to play satellite without changing key, with the capo on the first fret. You end up using the top four strings, without any stretch, but you have to move your fingers a bit more. Sometimes I almost think it sounds more like the L@LC version, where you hear the fingers sliding around the freboard instead of always moving to the next string. Anyway, I used to play it that way until I got the rhythm down and my fingers stretched.
