[ISO]Raven @ Benaroya Hall Lyrics (10-24-02)

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

So im having a quick listen to LWS and its obvious they are different. So my question is why did they change them? I know the album leaked, but its not as if they wrote totally different songs for the album? I dont understand?

there is 1 major thing I do not like about the LWS, which made the band abandon them. They were depressing. Not the tunes, the band, they were too depressed, you can feel it in every song. It sounds like if there was a camera on them playing the tracks, they would be striaght faced or looking down, not paying attention to things. Busted Stuff may not be as nice and complex and intricut or have the best lyrics, but you can feel the band is actualy happy again. That is actualy why I listen to BS more than LWS because I hate that depression. The only thing I go back to listen on the LWS a lot is Monkey Man (since it's the only recording available, but still very dim).

LWS, the ideas were there and great, the band wasn't.
BS, the ideas were ok, but the band was there, back in the saddle.

That depressed feel is exactly why I like them way more than the BS versions. They are depressing songs they should have a depressed feeling in them. I hate the BS versions because Dave just sounds way to happy in certain songs, especially Grace Is Gone. The Lillywhite Sessions are way more authetic to me.

You hit it man, but these reasons ARE the reasons why I care about the LWS. It's such a dim and dark disc and I love it.

Dave's singing is so pure, guttural at some points and soaring in others. It just puts me in a certain "place" when I hear these recordings.

I am not talking about the depressing songs. It's full of dark songs, and I love those dark ones, but I don't like hte dark band. I mean, the band can be having a great time and play depressing as hell songs and make them work. Dreaming Tree for one, super depressing (my favorite dmb song too) but the band you could feel was excited to be making such a song. Listen to the Verses on Typical Situations on any live or album version, that part of the song very dark feeling, but they love playing it. I prefer the directions of the songs on the LWS verses the BS goals, but the band isn't happy to be in there. They want to get out, they want to go out in the sun, get out of the studio. They weren't concentrating on the music, they didn't want to do it. I feel like they just want to lay down the track and leave. Then they have to come back, and they get even darker. It's not the DMB I know and love. It almost felt like an album with them breaking up. It's very much like Let It Be. The Beatles just didn't want to do it, they couldn't play the game anymore. I love songs on Let It Be, I adore Across the Universe and the Long And Winding Road (without the strings), but it's not the Beatles anymore. It's just 4 people who want to leave. Luckily, dmb didn't head where they went. They left to regroup themselves, and survived.

Again, great songs, great direction, (has so much more potential than BS had) but it wasn't the band. I'd rather listen to The Dreaming Tree more than BEF on the LWS, even though the Dreaming Tree is much more depressing song, it's just a better band.
