Dave's gettin' soft

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

You've made your thoughts very well known on this subject many times. Ha....it's just like me to remember stupid stuff like that.

He's very folk influenced and I think he's taking that and running with it. He's been playing those "hard" songs for so long simplicity is probably a breath of fresh air. I don't think it's anything other than him wanting to persue other sounds.

At least he still plays all the hard stuff like satellite and the stone

maybe its hard to write hard songs after writing 100 of them, give the guy a break, staying somewhat creative after writing all those unbelievable riffs is hard for anyone

I love his new riffs. They are not so complex that they overwhelm the music yet are pretty.

i read somewhere that the lyrics to 41 were written while he was going through legal disputes with his mentor/teacher over his material. i wouldnt take my word on things like this though, just wondering if anyone has any input as to his educational background.

Yea, fuck...I agree on giving the guy a break...he knows just as well as we do that his new stuff ain't as good as the old, but it's definitely still good work. I think he's one of the greatest musical artists of all time.(but I guess we'll only know for sure in 100 years). And he's the best thing that's happened to music as far as I'm concerned. Keep in mind I'm not talking about masterpeices or whatever, just what I would like to listen to the most, and I'm sure that a lot of you feel the same. So anyway, I give Dave a break, he still has it in him.

Difficulty to play aside, I really think that some of the stuff on Some Devil and Busted Stuff ranks among his best:

Grey Street
Bartender
Where are you Going
So Damn Lucky
Some Devil
Stay or Leave
etc...

He even played many of the 'old' Dave Style Chords on those tunes. I'm excited to hear some of the new material when I catch him in August, maybe there will be something as uptempo and unique as Tripping Billies on the new album.

I heard a new song of his on VH1 called sing along. Its different in texture from his other songs but similar in innovation to the songs on Some Devil. I like it.
Butterfly is a cool little song too.

That's the song he did with the Blue Man Group a while back. The texture is different because Blue Man Group did the music, Dave just sang.

Another lonely day by Ben Harper is a very, very simple song. However, the emotion that it conveys is what makes it beautiful. Simple songs can force the song to rely more on emotion, and less on technical dazzlement.
