LIOG recappin

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

i say go to another song for now and come back in 6 months. i had to do that 2 or 3 times w/ tears in heaven when i first started. had to do it a time or two w/ tripping billies. sometimes it just doesn't make sense. but if you move on instead of obsessing about one song and then come back to it, it'll give you a better perspective and you'll be more skilled when you attempt it again

Good job for sure. Sounds perfect except for this part :

Code: Select all

E:-2-------------------------------------
B:-3------------------1-------------------
G:-2--------2---------2--0h2--0-----------
D:-0--2--4-----4--0---2----------4--2--4--
A:----------------------------------------
E:----------------------------------------
      1 4 1 4 (1) 4 1 4

Its that 0h2--0, it sounds like your missing the hammer on. Anywho, i'm drunk and don't mean any harm. The key is practice.

Yes and no. It's not what they meant, but it's a good idea to angle the pick that way. It's alot easier that way because of all the muting done with your fretting hand.

What they meant is the angle of your downstroke. So you don't hit unintended strings.

During the main part of the riff:

Code: Select all

E: 2--2xx----------------
B: 3--3xx----------------
G: 2--2xx--------0--2--4
D: 0------4--2-----------
A: ----------------------
E: ----------------------
it's not muted. It's just the way you strum I guess. It's sort of a downward chopping motion, like if you really exagerated picking the notes. I suppose the same thing goes for the pull-off part too.

It's pretty much the same strumming/picking pattern, except with a hammer-on in between the picks.

Dude, I've been playing for 15 years and playing Dave daily for three and I still don't sound like him and never will.

He's got talent I can't even comprehend.

Here's how to save you some sanity:

Don't be like Dave. I can't stress this enough. Learn the song, figure out how YOU like it to sound and then make it your own.

You think Dave would want to go listen to someone play his songs JUST like he does? Hell no. I wouldn't. I'd want someone to take one of my songs and do something unique with it ... Which is why when Dave does covers (like All Along the Watchtower) it doesn't sound like anyone else's version.

Same can be said for Cortez, The Killer ... have you heard Neil Young's version? It's completely different.

Be true to yourself and use Dave's music as the map to your destination but figure out how you want to get there yourself.

Another tip, mute like a motherf$

Muting is your friend. It covers mistakes and is a way to add your own personality to the song.

have you tried playing it slow? one note/chord at a time and try to get the picking and strumming down that way first then speed up? classic maneuver there man..
for the muting and hitting more strings at once you have to get your fretting hand the way dave has it, have you ever seen how he plays his favorite 2-fret apart chords? his pinky and index fret and the palm/middle/ring mute all strings not hit because they are straight up and down..his index and pinky look like upsidedown L's .. thats really the only advice i can give you on that, once i practiced getting my hand like that - took like 2-3 months to get it to be comfortable - songs like LIOG, Recently, that cool fill in Diggin A Ditch .. all come much much easier and you can hit more than one string and the mute adds a cool sound to it...
dont know if that helps im a musical novice who is decent at playin a shitload of dave songs so...i dunno...dont take any of that as rude, im tryin to help!

he's trying to learn how to play. if you want to become technically better and be able to progress skillwise, it's not a bad idea to learn a song the way it is. if you can play liog the way it was written, THEN you can make it your own. but don't cheat yourself out of learning a good song just because it's too hard.
