One can start playing guitar with Crash and take 6 months to play it well. But during those 6 months one has problably learned 10 other complete songs...dmb_josh wrote:I gotta say, anyone that is saying the first song they learned how to play was a Dave song is full of it (with the exception of something like Proudest Monkey). Are you kidding me? First songs that people learn are a couple of cords that are easily strummed.
Crash? I don't believe it.

If you're first songs were really DMB, then I'm very impressed. But I find it extremely hard to believe.
Seriously, I've taught a bunch of friends how to play thier first songs. Getting them to form a straight A chord was serious work. You can't tell me everyone here skipped that phase and jumped straight to Dave's fingerings. It just doesn't happen.
If you're first song was crash, OSW or even nancies...I'm betting it sounded like shit. There is a lot of talent on these boards, but C'mon!

Completely disagree. The whole reason for me picking up the guitar was to play Dave songs. I know my first attempt to play something was Crash Into Me. Something I could easily recognize, and would work hard to play it. Yes, sounded like shit the first time. But played it.
My first song to get down completely was Pantala Naga Pampa.

Yeah, I believe it's possible. It just means you took more time to learn the first song(s). Congratulations for the motivation. I don't think I could ever start with such a song like Crash. At the beginning I needed to get a lot of well sounding notes, just to motivate my progression.DrumsFoDaSoul wrote:Completely disagree. I'm not ripping on everybody who learned Dave first. I guess I just assumed that most people start off by learning the basic chords, strumming patterns, etc. like I did. I think that to jump right to Dave's unorthodox style of play immeidately will only slow you down in the long run.
But I guess that's why most of us play. We heard a song that we thought was great, and wanted to be able to play it.

exact same story here.. and it didnt take 6 months to play crash well. almost all i've played for my first six months are Dave songs so at some point you get used to the style.Completely disagree. i realize just playing dave stuff isnt good for my guitar playing in general, so i'm starting to learn other stuff.
