tomami, i meant to say mute with the LEFT hand, but right hand muting is a very useful tool as well.
and like jason, i hardly do any muting when i play the stone, right or left hand

I would say those mutes are left handed , but at the same time he is hitting pretty precise so not many mutes are needed if that makes sense to you at all ?
I would say that both Hans and Jason are right in saying they don't mute much , i don't do that either when i play it .... Its like Hans explained it , muscle control

You guys rule
Thanks for gettin' so into this so that I can understand how to play this damn thing.
TOMAMI--thanks for the detailed explanation on the first page of this madness.....
as for my recent findings...i think dave doesn't mute at all on the first two notes of the songs. cause they are both on the down strum i think its easy to nail em totally clear...as for the rest i'll try what Tomami said...
but i'm interested in the palm muting...but i know for a fact he's not doing it on KFOG...except in the very beginning
thanks again dudes

You gotta love the DMBTabs.com Community

CORONA5K1635 watch the video on this site and you can see I think its jkanter playing anyway he mutes the top string with his 3rd Finger and holds it there. If you look close he lets his 4th finger hold down the 5th fret A string while it rests on the D string below. so when you down stroke the first note half strumming hitting top three string you only hear the 5th fret note. any way watch the video kfog, and trust what you see(the end when he fast strums it). also check out the video thats with the tab on this site. I think learning it this way is easier and more relaxed than pick pick pick pick... and also allows you to play it fast like at the end of kfog video.

Congratulations and you are welcome. Thanks for hanging in because it sucks when you try so hard to learn one way and have to go back and re teach yourself a new way, alot of people just go back to the old way. I had the same problem you did with the stone until I saw the kfog video.
P.S. you helped me when you backed me up on OSW when I asked the board if dave strummed or picked the verse we both said he strummed
and after playing over and over with half strums I have nailed that song.

I haven't even attempted the stone very much. I can play the intro and that's about it. Where can I get this video you're talking about? I can't use AIM at work, so it would have to be html, or streaming someplace. Anybody know where? I've always wanted to learn but it just has looked too hard for me. I can play most anything else Dave does. thanks

Ohhhhh yeah...i remember...OSW..right yeah. glad i could help on that. for some reason that one was very easy for me.
as for you....KFOG is on Kazaa. thats where i got it. just type in Dave Matthews live...or the other way around..or the Stone. that should work nicely.
---i've come to a grand conclusion about the Stone:
Dmbfanjason is right. And so are you Tomami.....Both ways should be used i think. "it is the middle way which is best". yes. if originally in the '99 tour with timmy he played it like jason does...*accurately picking*, then that means its correct. but i know on KFOG he strums after doing that for only the intro..maybe some of the first verse. so that means that strumming it is correct. so both are right.
so the conclusion is this:
dave matthews plays this song way more than any of us because he wrote it and had been playing it for years. so, i would think that after *accurately picking* it for a year or whatever, you get a great feel for where the strings are and you are able to strum-pick it with good accuracy and "some" muting, with the left hand.
so for beginning the song..i'm muting everything. but i'm also playing with picking for the first verse...then after getting the feel in some amount of time...no need to rush cause it sounds fine...i'll play with less muting and more accurate strums.
booya.
i'm putting this one to rest.
shit i think thats my longest post ever. i rule
later dudes
