You're talking about the 9th chords? You can also play them without the bottom note (on the high e string). Sometimes I play 9th chords with all my fingers (w/out barring anything). for example:

pinky
ring
index
middle
-x-

oh i didnt think of that, thanks man. I'll give that a try until I get better at the barred style. Could even move the pinky to the e-string to keep the high end note, and mute the 2nd string.
