Dave's Right Hand....

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

it's kinda like when strumming a D and only playing the bottom 4 strings. or like playing a high G (one of my favorite voicings) and only playing the bottom 3.

Code: Select all

  D G
e-2---7-
b-3---8-
G-2---7-
D-0-----
A-------
E-------
only it is even more exact so that you would only be playing 1 or 2 strings. like a quick B5 can be played as

Code: Select all

e--- But since you are strumming
b--- you might actually play
G--- -(x)-
D-4- --4--
A-2- --2--
E--- -(x)-
i found it easy to learn by just picking the strings and then just going quicker until i am flailing about and basically strumming one string at a time. now i can do it as i make up a song and not really think about the strumming technique as much.

it also is kinda like flat picking or up-and-down picking where you use the up stroke and the downstroke to pick strings. just on a bigger scale.

and, of course, every guitarists favorite peice of advice....Practice :) ....

You'd be amazed, but not in the way you'd expect.

YO yo yo

Just HAVE TO REPLY here cause i've been playing for about 10months and started with dave and have never left dave. At first his chord stretches and rhythm was the big challenge. ..but after mastering that sheeot i've become OBSESSED with figuring out "his right hand".

I could talk FOREVER about ...i've watched both DVDs and many many videos just watching "the hand" ...but just for now i'll say what i'm working on now..."The Stone" ..yeah man. its plague'n me like a virus just like all the rest of you guys.

What i've noticed is..i think..i think...he does what he does during the verse of DDTW. If you notice ..Dave does NO MUTING of the top (dropped D) string with his left hand in DDTW verse...and he's not *hitting* it either. 'What he does i've seen is tilt his hand so when he strums down he mutes (or traps? i guess) the top string with his right hand. He looks just like this in the stone and R&R too! and others.. so i think thats a BIG part.

trap that top string!

peace

...continues to work....

You are close in your tab of OSW you just don't need to hit all those strings just a few around the note you are playing (x6x)( X8X) (x7x) the only full strum (xx88xx) (xx1010xx) (xxxxxx). This topic has come up alot check some older posts.

a good sonG to practice this on (the first time I ever used it) is metallica's enter sandman

Code: Select all

-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
-------------5-----------------------------------
---------7-------------------7-------------------
---0--------------6---5--------------------------

I strum that whole part anytime after the intro to give it a more metallica sound, try it using all downstrokes for the notes.

and I figured out how to post tab on my first try!
