Although I started reading music right from the beginning, I also basically learned by ear. I learned piano (my first instrument) via the Suzuki method, in which aural training is very, very important. When you are given a new piece of music to learn, you listen to it first, and then play it. Many people don't really like it as this hurts one's sight reading abilities, but I value the training very much. Sight reading is definitely the weakest part of my musical abilities, but I probably have the best ear of anyone that I know. I do a whole lot more improv stuff on the piano then I do sight reading, so I'm really glad that my aural skills were emphasized when I was younger. That being said, being able to read music is very important, and the theory helps everything make sense, and it's improved me as both a performer and a composer.

I know their relationships soley on my observasion and deduction (and sometime induction)...but I completely understand the whole two edged sword of theory thing though...

Riddle me this...I can play along with somebody, and make overlapping (wether it be by different strumming patterns, different solos, or most of the time - by different ways of playing a chord)...
example...if someone is playing an open a (bar the 2nd fret position), i can improv a melody over top on the fly, by switching through a whole mess of different postionings on different frets...ie
for A, i will throw in
E:-----0-------------------0---------
B:-----0------------------10-----------
G:-----6------------------9----------
D:-----7-------or--------7----------
A:-----0------------------0------------
E:------------------------------------
and I can easily whip out these for any other chords on the fly, because I understand...its just not by the same reasons you do...got me?

yeah, a friend of mine who I went to my college was a music student (fuckin' amazing drummer) once told me of a friend/classmate of his that was a freak of a sight reader - I guess the guy could read like pages ahead of everyone else. That is a fucking skill and a half. but he might not have a good a musical ear as say you tico or fire. Tico, I can tell you have a good ear from your songs. knowing what to play and being able to play it are two different things. I'm still learning, but I learned by ear and theory together sort of. mostely by ear though. I mean playing Dave so much its mostly rhythm anyway which is ALL practice. Rhythm is my current girlfriendticohans wrote:Although I started reading music right from the beginning, I also basically learned by ear. Ahh, but I do understand completely, because that is what I used to do, fire. While I've always been able to read music, reading music is not music theory. It's required for theory, but it has nothing to do with the theory itself. It was only my senior year of highschool that I really started any theory, and that was only a half way job of it. Once I started college I really began theory stuff in earnest. I've gone through all of the theory here at Davidson, and learned to do all sorts of crazy stuff.

I guess that we are all examples of different backrounds but we do share a love for the music

well, ill just jump in here. i cringe when i think about having to learn theory. i know the bare minimum but i do want to make myself better in knowing how it all goes together. also, im teaching myself piano (just started) so im getting into it finally. for those that would know, does dave seem to have a prefered key? i dont really need to know, just curious.
