No, I said it wierd. I agree with you and what you are saying is right. I meant play something palm muted, then play the same thing while muting with your fretting hand. My badjkanter wrote:Ha.....maybe I'm wrong then. I was under the impression that Palm Muting is w/ your strumming hand. If it's w/ fretting hand then we're all saying the same thing....if it's not...then I'm saying the opposite of you guysBeauford33 wrote:If you palm mute songs then mute them with your fretting hand, you can tell that he uses his fretting hand. They sound similar, but the fretting mute adds a more "Dave-like" sound
Sorry if I had my terms mixed up guys
Does Dave ever use Palm Muting on any Songs? also....

Oh...also guys.....just listen to the intro of Minarets he plays. We all know that's obviously just normal muting on the fretting hand but that's the same sound we get at verse of Nancies and LIOG. Just figured you guys could listen to those clips to get a good showing of how they sound the same.
Also, I'm not saying Dave never palm mutes....when he plays songs solo he does sometimes to get a little more rhythm type sound out of the songs....but he doesn't do it THAT often

You misunderstood me, i didn't say he palm muted that, but only muted with his palm to get that sound. Seperate your definitions of palm muting and a muted strum with the palm. This is really all very trivial stuff by the way.jkanter wrote:I mean, if you were here w/ me as I was playing guitar.....I'd be able to show you.....but Dave doesn't palm mute on that LIOG part...same w/ Nancies and countless others I'm too lazy to name.eze3484 wrote:I just don't agree with that, to get that accented mute I really think he does use the palm to mute. Yes he is muting with his fretting hand but that extra "chuck" sound has to be coming from his palm. Its not palm muting per the definition but a type of percussive palm thingy.
He also uses a kind of semi mute strum on gravedigger which is really cool.
I mean, palm muting can give you the same effect...but Dave just doesn't use it all that much....he does sometimes....just not that much

Pat---I have noticed that distinctive sound in Gravedigger---do you know how he's doing it or when he's palm muting? Also---I posted a thread about Typical Situation asking about this.dmbguitar718 wrote:He palms mutes alot more than that. He may use it sometimes...but one sutff like the mute in the middle of LIOG and the mute duirng the verse of Nancies......that is all Dave using his fretting hand with a specific type of up/down stroke that he uses ALL the time.
I can explain it more later....but from what I've gotten, he doesn't palm mute all that much.
But really, he palm mutes very, very often. Just more when he's playing solo or with Tim.
on songs with repeating riffs he tends to play the intro once through kinda muted when he plays live...
eg: that nancies video that was in the recording and critiqueing forum like a few weeks ago.

Yeah, that's a perfect example. He's palm muting in the acoustic Gravedigger. Same with the studio Stone.myonlybliss wrote:Pat---I have noticed that distinctive sound in Gravedigger---do you know how he's doing it or when he's palm muting?
