So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I used to play it like that.. before I found this site

I like that ALOT. It sounds much fuller on my guitar.
it was either 3-29-03 or 3-28-03 D&T where dave played that at the end of the song and sang the lyrics to 'everyday'
so i throw that in for a change
and for the chorus i really like playing open G, D/F#, Cmaj7
as far as people playing it right or wrong...whatever, who cares...as long as you play along and it sounds well enough together, it's all good, it's all about playing music and enjoying it

I basically mean am I an asshole for saying, Dave doesnt play it that way, he plays it this way. The kid played a few dave songs and they were all wrong, so I told him and hes like, they can be played many different ways, kind of gettin attitudy. I wasnt trying to be an ass to the kid but, hes not into dave like I am and I know what Im saying and he obviously didnt. So I guess I was just wondering if I should let people play or if its not a big deal if I point out their mistakes. I know they can be played different ways but he only knows and is only playing the easy "cheating" way and I can play it the hard right way. I guess its not a big deal, I just didnt like the attitude I got from someone who thinks its interchangeable and cant play it the hard way.
wow, that post started out with the intention of being short, still dont know if I got my point across, oh well

I tell people they're playing dave wrong all the time. More than I'd like to admit.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

I don't think you are an ass, but if you say it like that, some might think it. You can say this after watching what he plays:
Yeah, that sounds good, it's not the Dave Matthews way, but good. I can show you his way if you want, it's got a bit of a stretch, his chords. Yours still sounds pretty good, has a fullness to it.
Now you sound friendly, get the point across, and just says it in a more pleasing different form.

I recommend this site quite often. I feel a bit like a bible salesman, but I owe so much to this site it is my civic duty to proclaim the good news of this site.

Some friends of mine and I hit a similar situation when we were tailingating HiFi Buys for the Atlanta show last summer. We were jammin out some DMB among other songs and we had several people stop to listen. A few asked for a minute on the guitar to show something off and, since it is my POS travel guitar, I certainly had no problem sharing the love. Some got the songs right while some totally bastardized them so when I got the guitar back, without saying a word other than commenting on how much I like the song, I just played it the DM-way I know best. 99% of the time they are blown away and actually ask to be shown how it's done.
Furthermore, one of the guys and I site down and actually figured out the majority of So Damn Lucky while we were chillin. I say just be tolerant in how other people play - at some point someone probably had to tolerate all of us as well when we didn't know any better.
Peace,

that's cool to say, I wouldn't have a problem with that. It sounds like you're trying to help, not trying to make then look like an idiot.

Perhaps you could ask them if they would like to know how Dave plays it. If they say "no", then that's fine, and if they say, "yes" then you can show them. Hell, you could even play it while they play it there way, throw in some improvising and have fun playing a cool medley.:)

OK, this has been a controversial topic since I can remember...bottom line is..."Just play it the way it sounds best, period." and I'll tell you that 99.9999999999999999999999999% Dave does it. That's it, the man plays it the best possible way that it can be played. there is really no room for argument as far as I'm concerned. I am OPENLY appreciative of nice things. If someone plays a Dave song better "sounding" than Dave, I'll be the first to admit it. He plays and sings the Maker better than that Daniel whatever could ever play it, so I'll play that song like Dave does. At the same time, if I could play Watchtower like Hendrix could, I'd play it the way Hendrix did, and not the way Dave does.
As for Dave's songs, some clown that thinks he can play a Dave song just by playing the right chords we can all just kinda shrug our shoulders at him because we know what's up if you know what I mean...I'm with you 100% jksgu.
It's like taking a Ferrari or whatever and shaping it to look more like a Mustang...Why fuck with perfection?

I would never take another persons music that seriously. The only thing I spend that much time on are the things I write.
Stay with me, safe and ignorant.
