I'm going to have to agree with you on this one. I thought he palm muted, but I realized when I started playing more of his songs, he is just slapping. You can almost consider it muting, but I wouldn't quite go that farDMBFan63 wrote:maybe you're taking slaps as a mute.. but they're not the same..

OK, thanks for you replies but I still can't make it up all the way. I have a tab that looks like this and I would need some indications on when to strum Up and Down.

i tried to go through that and write all the up and downs for you but it was a much harder task than i expected
when it comes to strumming patterns, you can't always just ask people how many times you go up and down because while there might be a pattern it changes throughout the songs. this might not be what you're looking for but you just have to feel it. i'm assumming you have "Some Devil" so go and listen to the acoustic version over and over and try and learn to distinguish between and upstroke and a downstroke and get a feel for the rhythm. and focus on the intro because once you get that down you'll pretty much have the whole song down.
sorry i couldn't help more
*oh and don't strum as many times as that tabs says to, it's not supposed to be an EXACT representation of how he's strumming

i've recently realized after watching the benaroya hall dvd that dave gets that percussive sound by slightly lifting his fretting fingers to mute the sting during part of the strumming pattern. if this is what "slapping" is then that's what he's doing. pretty sure he doesn't palm mute.
noticed this while he was playing nancies. nancies verse is very percussive and the notes don't really ring out and this is how he does it.
as for gravedigger strumming pattern, the verse and part of chorus is standard dave. similar to crush or #41. emphasize the first downstroke after hitting the base note. the intro and fills with the hammer-on is somewhat different of course as is the last part of the chorus riff.
