when does he play the "8-7-"? To me it looks to me like it's just "8" with the ring finger.

I didn't say he didn't play two notes, because it does seem like his hits eight twice...I watched on storytellers, and I don't see him play any note on the 7th fret after he hits eight with his ring finger...peace.

he plays 8th fret with his ring finger on the low E, the he puts his middle finger down on the 7th fret of the A-string, then slides with his index... im positive

first of all...turns out he doesnt put his ring finger on the 8th fret, its his pinky, take another look...my mistake too....and if we are watching the same storytellers video, first of all you don't actually see his middle finger down on the fret, it's just waving around it...second of all, if you listen to the song...there is no sound like the 5th string, 7th fret, it sounds weird if you play it like that...there is two notes he plays though...its "8","8".[/b]

listen, theres no hope in trying to get u to admit im correct and vice versa, so u play it ur way, and ill play it mine, i strongly believe im right, but no use in fighting, merely a difference of opinion, if i see otherwise ill admit that u were correct, but till then.... no hard feelings, eh!

just a matter of preference

Unread post by idreamedikilledgod » Mon Oct 07, 2002 2:22 am

listen. its all just a matter of preference. i mean everyone is caught up in trying to play it exactly like dave does, well dave doesn't hardly play it the same any. i mean in the crash book he hits the 7th fret. on storytellers he hits the 7th fret. i've been to 6 shows. i've seen tripping billies twice. he just switches everything up. sometimes he hits 7 sometimes he dont. just use variation and i'm sure it will all sound alot better. and dont be soo caught up in the way dave plays it EXACTLY...

again, my opinion, but isn't it always...

Alright....So here's the final say in this entire convo. This thread has clearly gone from information to fighting. No reason for that.

idreamikilledgod is right. Dave does mix up the way he plays a lot of songs, every now and then. A song like Tripping Billies isn't actually switched up for the sole reason that it is too complicated. But he is also right that you don't HAVE to be hung up on the way Dave plays it. My site is here to give people insight as to how DAVE plays songs, not us. But that doesn't mean you have to play it as he does. Developing your own style is important. Now, developing your own style and playing DMB 100% is what I choose for myself. But it's everyone's opinion. If someone want to copy Dave in every aspect, there is nothing wrong w/ that.

Now, as for the arguement on whether or not Dave hits the 7th fret on the A string. I am going to have to say no, and I have clear cut 100% proof on this. If you go to the first chorus of Tripping Billies on Storytellers. Right after "Cause we're Tripping Billies" He goes into the verse riff. This is about 1min and 10sec into the song...I have a clip of just the song(and one of the whole show). You can CLEARLY see his ring finger floating above the strings. It is bent because he needs to make sure he can hit the 4/5 without muting it, but the finger does not fret any notes. Check it out, loop that 1clip....it's right.

Anyway, play it the way you want. I never said that anything else sounds bad or is wrong. I just put out what I see and hear Dave playing....peace

I know I have other videos of him playing this song. Let me see if those will show anything different.

I see it too jkanter...his finger just waves around the fret board never touching down on anything on the 7th fret.

To reopen a post from wayt he hell back in October, I still think Dave plays the middle of Billies verse like this:

Code: Select all

--------------
--------------
-----4/5-4-0--
--------------
---7----------
-8------------
It cant just be the 8 then the little slide from 4 to 5, its to dead in between that. Sorry to ressurect this old post but does anyone else agree there is something at least along the lines of what Im talking about?

I know the whole play it how ever it sounds right to you and all that speech and I dont mean to demean kanters tab becasue I wouldnt be able to play anything if it wasnt for this site, I just wanna know if anyone else thinks maybe he plays it a different way?
