anyone know of any online lessons to help me figure out how to find keys? I have musical background but I get confused with this and no one will explain it to me properly. A lot of people have told me that same 'first or last chord' bullshit, but that doesnt work. Any help on this process?

i don't take theory, but i know it. if the key signature on a song has no flats or sharps, its in the key of c. halloween does some funky out of key stuff though, like the E chord.

the Key of C:

C
Dm
Em
G
Am
Bm
C

the last flat in a key signature is Fa. the last sharp in a key signature is Ti. go from there. i check key signatures the way nearly all vocalists do. i'm not full of myself. i never said you guys don't know what you were talking about (to the best of my memory)
I don't think any of this post made any sort of sense, particularly the last paragraph... what is Fa and Ti?
Ummm you got some more studying to do. If a key signature has no sharps or flats it's not automaticaly in C. No sharps or flats could imply any one of the following and many more DEPENDING on what the harmony and tonal center is:
C Ionian(major)
D Dorian
E Phrygian
F Lydian
G Mixolydian
A Aeolian (minor)
B Locrian
and a slew of pentatonic scales.
I assume you know that these are called modes. Although each of these have the same notes if you stack thirds to build harmony from the scale you'll notice how different they are.
Of course Dave's music is major or minor 90% of the time but there are some exceptions.
Anyway it took me years to really internalize this stuff and it's a little frustrating to have someone who obviously doesn't grasp it proclaim themselves a key signature know-it-all. Feel free to PM me if you really want to know what your talking about.
I know it's a year later, but I just had a question. What chronological order should I learn all the info from the quoted post? Any links to any places that elaborate on modes and harmonies and such?

That's an F in the chorus not a F#. It could potentially be a G Mixolydian progression but the G is a suspended second so there's no resolution whatsoever.

I think fool to think is in E....

I might be wrong though. Especially because he finishes on a D.

It would be weird for a song in E to finish on the minor seventh of the scale.

It could still 'work', though.

He DOES end in a Dsus2, so it's impossible to tell whether if it's a Minor or a major chord. The verse IS in E...that's for sure.

LIOG ends on an A chord but it's undoubtably in D.
