(this is the only pic i could find)

the lines go EGBDF, spaces FACE.

here, there are sharps. the musical scale goes do re mi fa sol la ti do.

the last sharp is ti, and you go up one note to find the do (root) note. Here its B.

thats how you determine major scales, but here it says B minor. one way you find out whether its major or minor, vocal wise, is you look at the starting pitch. if its la, in this case, la=Ab. if it starts on an Ab, that means its minor, since the minor scale goes la ti do re mi fa so la.

well, thats what i basically use.
So you were talking about reading key signatures? I was under the impression we were talking about how to detirmine the key...without the key signature. :D
Figuring out a key from the key signature takes all of two seconds. That's why it's called a key signature.
That's like saying you know how to multiply with a multiplication table in front of you. :?

A-minor, but it changes modally throughout the song so if you are trying to solo along with it you will not be able to just do pentatonic.

Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

The verse is E major no doubt about it.

The pre-chorus is a bit funky and doesn't fit nicely into any particular key. I personally would think of it as D major with F being the b3-major and C being the b7. Both of those variations give a funkiness/harder edge to D.

I think of the chorus as E major. It's similar to the pre-chorus actually. The 7th is flat and 3rd is flat which again=funk/blues feel.

You probably wanted a simpler answer but there really isn't one. Anything that has a blues feel usually means the b3, b5, b7 are in use. These are all "blue" notes and give a blues flavor to major or dominant progressions.

You'll notice that an E Blues scale(E,G,A,Bb,B, D) conveniently contains all these "blue" notes. G=b3, Bb=b5, and D=b7. Tim is using this scale, with some other chromatic notes thrown in, for his solo on L@L and proabably every other solo he's done over that jam.

i didnt want a simpler answer!
i know a lil theory but dunno scales (except "classic" majors and minors)...that's all i wanted: it's based on the E blues scale (E, G, A, Bb, B, D)...thx a lot man!!
