So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

For me: LIOG, stone (at least the verse), and tripping billies
I find it very hard to believe you can play Stone or Billies just like Dave. Most people who claim they can play Stone just like Dave are full of shit.
actually, it isn't all that hard to play it exactly the way he does. not sure how long everyone here has been playing...i started 7 years ago on 'live at luther college' and i can emulate it exactly. but like another guy says, i have more fun trying to mix it up a little bit and putting my own spin on it. sometimes its not fun trying to be exactly like someone else. everyone is making a big deal about who can sound the most like "dave." its kind of creepy. but when i play, it does sound just like he is sitting in my room playing. no lie. billies and stone aren't hard.
It doesnt take much to sound like him. I can play Stolen Away on 55th and 3rd along with the original recording and I can make my guitar sound just like the way Dave is playing it on that track. One thing that amazes me about Dave is that he admits that he has only slightly gotten better over the years because of the band but thats a bunch of bull, he still plays just as well as he did 15 years ago (wow I was only like 6 when they released their first album) when the band was first together and touring, to me he plays a lot better now and has branched out a bit in his playing. It is cool that he plays electric guitar now on some of their more recent albums and I am sure if he put his mind to it, he could become just as good of a electric player as Tim is so long as he tries. Imo Dave is a pesimist when it comes to playing electric guitar because I know deep down he could rock out just like anyone else. We all know Boyd, Carter and LeRoi can play solos and its about time Dave got out of his shell and started playing electric guitar like a rock star

If I got up on stage with those guys to play a song I would literally shit my pants to the point where my underwear have a hole in them and there is crap on the stage because of it
Honestly though, performing with big name musicians is really cool, I have played with a couple of cats most of you people never heard of even though they played with some of the biggest jazz groups of the 50's and 60's. I play in a local jazz group and we perform tribute concerts once a month from September until May and at the end of it all we get a guest artist to come in and play with us. Last year we got Canadian jazz clarinetist Phil Nimmons to come and play, and he scared the shit out of me (I play sax and clarinet and holy shit he is amazing for a guy who is 80). This year we are having Rob Somerville who played trombone for Miles Davis during the 70's come to play with us, and anyone who knows Miles Davis music knows that Miles was one mad motherfucker.

On VH1 live story thing, Dave did recieve lessons when he started out. His uncle said he would miss school and other things but he wouldnt miss his guitar lessons.
he's been playing since age 9, he has had many lessons and one long term teacher that #41 was written about.

Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

didnt read 8 pages of thread. but i think you guys all idolize dave way too much. is he talented as a writer and guitar player, both in style and technique? hell yes. is he unreachable? no. its not like he just picked up a guitar yesterday and found that he had Godly talent. i bet if you practiced as often and for as many of years as he has, you'd be about as good as he is. i DO think natural talent has something to do with it, but that aside, you just need practice. his songs are challenging, but not rediculously unplayable like most of you make them out to be. with practice, just about anyone with an ear for music and guitar could play as well as he.
that being said, i think i do a pretty good job of one sweet world.

I think that a lot of people can "replicate" dave's guitar on songs. I have been listening to dave since i was 5 years old and i've been playing his stuff on guitar for about 5 years now. I don't think he's an amazing guitar player. He's just really fuckin creative. For example i think John Mayer is a technically better guitar player than dave but dave and the band blend so well that I think its almost imposssible to reproduce their sound. So yea sure some of us can play it just like he does and it probably sounds the same but the energy and magic that the band has is what makes me love them so much.
Maybe I'm crazy.

Dont think so. There is so much that goes on in the songs on Some Devil. I wish I had a official tab of the acoustic version of Gravedigger.
