The x's mean to mute that string. I would use my index finger for the lower notes (I'm talking about the octaves after the G chord), and my pinky for the higher notes (i.e. index for the 3, pinky for the 5 etc.). And let your index finger hang over a little onto the D string so it hits it, but it doesn't press down hard enough to create an actual note.
