So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Hi all...

I'm a beginning player (2 years with some lessons), but am a trained vocalist already. I have probrably a dumb question, but hopefully someone won't mind answering:

While playing the chorus of the song (It's crazy, I'm thinking, just as long as you're around, etc.), because of where the chord is played on the guitar (and maybe because of a lazy pinky) I am always hearing the harmonics. I find that when I stay away from the two high strings that I get a very weak sound. I'd like to dead strum those two to add to the sound, but always harmonics. How does Dave do it? Also, can someone notate a typical rhythm. I find myself usually playing just four eighth notes for each chord. Sometimes Dave does that, but he often times changes it up. If you know the rhythm, can you also post with the down and upstrokes as well?

Thanks in advance...this site is great!

Jimmy

Im not sure if the strumming pattern that got posted above is completely correct or not...I dont think that it is how I play it; but its pretty close. As far as getting rid of the harmonics trying muting the B and E strings with the part of your index finger nearest your big knuckly...like kinda of lay that finger flat against the strings. That should prevent you from making the harmonic notes with your pinky.

Have you checked out his AOL sessions version on Youtube? Thats how I strum it.

Its the most awesome version ever, Dave starts Scattin at the power chord part.

Here's a clip I threw together on my way out to work, hope it helps. It might not be perfect so forgive me.
