Lets talk scaling/fills/etc

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Lets talk scaling/fills/etc

Unread post by Smaegol » Sat Dec 13, 2003 6:11 pm

I dont know anything about music theory. I read a tab, and practice the hell out of it till I get it to sound good. However, Id like to learn more about scales, creating my own fills, or just mixing things up. How do you know what key a song is in, and which scale to use? What do I need to know?

Thanks

WWHWWWH
(whole step whole step half step whole step whole step whole step half step)

the best way to see if you are right is to look at the last note. it should be a half step down from the original note.

SCALES

Cmaj: C D E F G A B C
Fmaj: F G A Bb C D E F
Bb: Bb C D Eb F G A Bb
Eb: Eb F G Ab Bb C D Eb
Ab: Ab Bb C Db Eb F G Ab
Db: Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db
Gb: Gb Ab Bb Cb(or B) Db Eb F Gb
Bmaj: B C# D# E F# G# A# B
Emaj: E F# G# A B C# D# E
Amaj: A B C# D E F# G# A
Dmaj: D E F# G A B C# D
Gmaj: G A B C D E F# G

1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
Notice also that I wrote the original note again at the end. This is because technically, scales have 8 notes, but it is just the octave of the original note

NOTES AND SCALES

Alright here's a handy system for refering to notes and their respective scales.

Since each scale has 7 notes (will say 7 so as to keep it simple), we can just refer to notes as numbers.
For instance, the 2nd note in the key of C is D. So we just say that D is the 2 of C major.
This system is called intervals and the reason i showed you this is because (with a guitar, it is much simpler to refer to intervals instead of specific notes.)

okay, since we will use the key of C, find C on the sixth string, which fret is it?
8
alright now, for the first interval...
staying on the same fret, go down to the 5th string
what note?
F
yeah thats right
okay now, what interval is F in relation to the key of C? 4

the string below it in the same fret always has the 4th interval

A chord formula is the intervals that make up a chord. For instance, a power chord is the 1 and the 5 scale.
and thats why power chords are written like this: C5
