What to play after Dave?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I asked this same question a month ago and a lot of people told Tommy Emmanuel. Let me tell you I just got hooked. I bought one of his tab books and his stuff is just incredible. Im working on two songs right now Angelina and Mona Lisa. They are beautiful songs and his music has made me so much better. Ive only been playing his stuff for a little over a month. His songs are very hard, Im only half way through Angelina and just started Mona Lisa. Also John Mayer is great. Ive been working on Neon and Why Georgia. I also got into electric blues. Im practicing a lot of different things which isnt the best thing but it keeps everything fresh.

I think you should try to play whatever you like that sounds tough when you listen to it. If I go tell you to play some Kaki King music, that might be a miss for you. If you hate it, you would never play it. I would never go play a Yngwie Malmsteem song, because I think he eats ass. I can't deny his chops, but God he sucks. If you like it, play it. There's something to be learned from all sorts of playing.

Most DMB is fun to play, but once you have it, you pretty much have it. This is a problem with many artists usually considered similar to them. So whatever you like, play. It's always beneficial to expand your tastes, especially as a musician yourself. As opposed to the post above, I see absolutely nothing wrong with learning a lot of different things at once. It will force you to concentrate on each style better instead of half-assing one style. I also take serious issue with anyone who suggests he jump into music like Justin King. Sure, he's absolutely sick, but he's on a whole different planet, and I feel that only some sort of savant could step into that kind of playing after beginning on DMB, which requires almost no fingerpicking ability, and no knowledge of scales, and focuses highly on percussive techniques on the strings, which is precisely the opposite of King's music.

Pretty much everyone here who says anything about it started out playing DMB. I did. It's all well and good, but Dave's got some issues with his technicality that will become a problem with a lot of other styles. So diversify, but keep it with what you like. But, as with all musical suggestions, do not write off anything without giving it a good hard listen.
