Playing like Dave?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Playing like Dave?

Unread post by Yakko » Mon Oct 02, 2006 5:04 pm

Does everyone here play all DAve's Songs exactly like Dave, or do they just play what sounds the same. I mean does everyone play grey street like:

E: ----------------------------------
B: ----------------------------------
G: -7----4---6---2----4---6---2---4--
D: -x----x---x---x----x---x---x---x--
A: -x----x---x---x----x---x---x---x--
E: -7----3---5---2----3---5---2---3--

With the exact fingerings?

When I first learned that song, I didn't do the ring/middle finger for the 3/4 and the ring/pinky for the 5/6 like Dave, I just slid my middle and ring fingers all over the fretboard. But after watching Dave, I now do it the way he does it as it makes a lot more sense. I just do what feels comfortable for me, which most of the time ends up being the way Dave plays it.

i use just two fingers for grey street, but i've got it down that you cant hear all the squeaking nonsense and its still on beat and everything.

Yep. Everything except for the 3103 chord in the stone. I play that with different fingers than dave. because it's easier.

That is pretty uncomfortable.

As for the question, Dave's way is usually easiest so, yea... Pinky barring is the only way I can play barre chords because it just hurts to use my ring.

I play Grey Street the same way that Dave does, but I just can't seem to master muting the strings. Its enough for me to just get the notes out! Anyone have any tips?

And yes, I am a relatively inexperienced guitar player.

DMBTabs, welcome to it.

For muting the strings in Grey Street, for the 7xx7 chord for example, I mute the A and D strings using my ring finger (the one fretting the low E string). I just lay it across the strings lightly. For the 3xx4 chord, I use my index finger to mute those 2 strings.

hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions you have. It will definitely help your playing.
