How does Tim do that?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

How does Tim do that?

Unread post by bitterape » Mon Mar 20, 2006 1:04 pm

I've tried searching, as I'm sure the question has been asked, but the forum is endless, and I haven't been able to find it.

How does Tim make those strange tonal changes on #41 during his solo? it sounds like perhaps a volume sweep? It's almost a wierd wah sound, or as if hes sliding on a fretless... or maybe striking the note with his finger on the fret wire and sliding to the wood? These are mostly stabs in the dark...

Anyone know what I'm talking about, and how he does it? Thanks for all of your help

DMBTabs, welcome to it...

He's using like a you said some sort of wah/volume pedal. Someone else may be able to give you more specifics.

It would depend on the show you are talking about. Most likely he is using his volume pedal and a delay pedal. If you pluck a note with the volume all the way down and then raise it, the delay will make it sound almost like a violin.

The other thing you may be thinking of is sometimes he will play something into his delay pedal when it is set on infinite repeat. then what he does is turn the knob that controls delay time. It will actually change the pitch. So he turns it until it is an octave higher or lower than what he originally played.

For reference, tim is using a DD-5 and an ernie ball volume pedal. Back during live at luther college i believe he was using a wah pedal in the place of the volume pedal.

yeah, I just found that the "effect" that I was hearing was through manipulation of a volume pedal.

Anyone know of a good one? I was looking at a VOX V850...

sounds like a delay thing, but not really delay as much as heavy heavy reverd, which would be light delay i suppose.

EDIT: ok checked another version and hes also using the volume a lot. with the delay.
