I did a little experiment in making my own baritone a couple of years ago. I'm more of an acoustic guitarist and had a cheap Epiphone Les Paul (est. $180 at Guitar Center) that I messed around with occasionally. I LOVED the deep sound of the baritone on Everyday and wanted to mess around with that tuning. I didn't really want to spend the cash for something I just wanted to goof around with so I did a really cheap and easy mod on my Epiphone.
First I went out and bought the heaviest gauge electric guitar strings D'addario makes...NOT their baritone strings...just the heaviest gauge electric strings. The strings needed to be heavy enough to be playable with the guitar simply tuned down to the B-E-A-D-F#-B tuning of a baritone. I was actually pretty suprised at the result. I had to play with the tune-o-matic bridge a bit to get a little more tension out of the strings at such a low tuning but it plays really well for a make-shift baritone. It took me awhile to get the intonnation perfect but, for the money, it works fine.
Feel free to ask any questions.
