Uh. Okay. I disagree. If someone doesn't have lessons and wants to learn a DMB song, they're going to do it.dmb_josh wrote:I gotta say, anyone that is saying the first song they learned how to play was a Dave song is full of it (with the exception of something like Proudest Monkey). Are you kidding me? First songs that people learn are a couple of cords that are easily strummed.
Crash? I don't believe it.
First for me was Grey Street, then Crash, and probably Satellite.
I played bass before I picked up guitar, so my fingers were pretty dextrous at that point.

41, first time i had ever picked up a guitar, i couldnt reach/ remember the fingering so i put a load of different coloured sitckers, my sister got mad as it was her guitar
Gervais on Rosa Parks "she was arrested but then that law was changed- but she didnt stop there, she started sitting in the seats saved for disabled people. unbelavable, she talked to the driver when the bus was in motion- did she have the correct change ready? - did she bollox!"
That's how I learned to play guitar was through Dave. And I'm not trying to brag or anything, but without lessons, I've come pretty far in just over 2 years. It was basically like learning the basics of guitar through Dave. Now I can look at any song and figure it out pretty easily.Festivus wrote:I'm not ripping on everybody who learned Dave first. I guess I just assumed that most people start off by learning the basic chords, strumming patterns, etc. like I did. I think that to jump right to Dave's unorthodox style of play immeidately will only slow you down in the long run.
But I guess that's why most of us play. We heard a song that we thought was great, and wanted to be able to play it.
I learned basic chords/names through play Dave songs. IE: LIOG intro ends on Em, A, G. That's how I learned the names for those chords.
I don't remember the first song I learned, but it's not impossible.

i agree with what your saying there but also they are going to miss alot of small stuff like knowing exactly what they are playing, i also believe that this will slow you down, starting off playing a hard song will only get u so far. i have a couple of friends that did this and i look at them now and for the amount of time that they have been playing they should have more "guitar knowledge" then they do! just my opinion
