Strumming

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Strumming

Unread post by pizeltz » Thu Oct 03, 2002 12:27 pm

So, I just recently started playing. The tabs and videos are great for figuring out the chords, but what about the strumming? I'm not sure if you can make the videos wider to show that, but I think it would be a huge benefit.

Specifically, can anyone explain to me the strumming in Typical Situation. I am starting with this because I hear it's probably the easiest song to learn. Another question I have on TS is about muting. Are you muting the B and E strings or just not strumming them? If you are muting them, then how are you doing it? When I try and mute them, you can easily hear the string being muted, but when I listen on the video, your guitar rings really nice.

Thanks. Great job on the site!

Try muting with whatever finger is above/below that string and do this by flatening out ur joint just enough to muffle it and when you strum try to do in a manner that produces sound from all the strings evenly so that muted sound isnt heard very much, so its as if you werent playing it at all.
Message me if this isntt clear.

i've addressed muting several times in detail (for whatever it's worth). i do most all my muting with my index as it lays accross ALL strings, while fretting either the E or A strings. works perfect in most situations.

but i've learned a new muting technique that works awesome. it involves duck-tape and my girlfriend's mouth but......well, fukkit. i doubt that'll answer your question. :P

well, i took the ducktape off, and now she's asking why i didn't actually address your question. which is indeed true. lol

strumming? isn't that everyone's problem when trying to play as well as dave. i have a ton of Dave/Tim shows, and man he's amazing. a strum within a strum within a strum. how the hell....

i too am trying to learn new strum patterns. it's hard to avoid getting stuck doing the same one's all the time.

help with learning to strum like dave? someone must have some truly insightful knowledge.....

...anyone care to share?

(ducktape goes back on lol)
