Strumming for JTR, Rhyme and Reason, WWYS..whatever....

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

i've actually seen dave use alternate picking on satellite. i've learned that unless you are looking for a certain sound you pretty much always alternate pick. besides doesn't the time signature a have something to do with the direction of your pick attack?

i thought it was always down on a downbeat. well, in 4/4 and 3/4 anyway... right?

the only reason i want to do the right thing and no the comfortable thing here is that i form habits easily, and i don't want to get into bad ones so early...

thanks everyone...

From my personal short experience.. please correct me if im saying something wrong... i usually use down strumming to easily keep rhythm, like in rhyme and reason or most of the jimi thing verse... that bridge for the stone... i find its easier to just get my right hand going and focus on the actual fingering... also i find its easier to down strum when muting is involved... really thinking about it.. im not sure if there is a solid rule on this... i think you use combination most of the time...

This post is a little old, but I'll add to it. dbernard - I have the Farm Aid video of Satellite and Dave uses all downstrokes. For a lot of Dave's songs I originally thought would be up-down he just uses down, like Tripping Billies, R&R, Ants, WWYS, Satellite, etc. He does use up-down for the OSW world intro though.

YES!

i learned it up-down, then everyone says dave plays all his songs with downs. i've been trying to play the OSW intro with all downs, but for some reason it just doesn't sound good that way, well not when my hands do it... :?
