Finger picking

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Finger picking

Unread post by i-am-me » Tue Sep 23, 2003 2:07 pm

I noticed from a couple of the videos of dave doing finger picking (farmaid grace is gone, live at the gorge grace is gone, tribute to heros everyday...etc.) That when he hits more than one note he does something weird. it looks like he hits the strings. I'm curious to know if anyone knows what' i'm talking about and if any of you guys do that. I doubt i will....but i'm just curious to know.

He is strumming wit his fingernails. He curls his fingers back a bit, and stricks down harder than with a finger. It makes that more harsher and bright.

sometimes he also does a strumming with his thumb. If you wanna do a slow downstrum, this might be better than doing it with your fingernails

The only problem with just strumming with your thumb is the sound produced isn't as vibrant as using your nails...

once you develop a callus on your picking thumb you can get really good sound out of it.

I don't really use my thumb for strumming so I don't know :)

The only thing I use my thumb for other than picking is slapping teh strings
