help with #40

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

You can keep this position for most of the songjust use your pinky and index for the rest.

the way i play it, is i keep my index on the 1 and my middle finger on the 2, and then i use my ring for the 3's and my thumb for the low 1. that's just my personal preference though, not everyone has big enough hands to get the thumb.

I have huge hands and i still have hard time with the thumb thing. I think if i had been playing with my thumb since i started i wouldnt have a problem, but i just cant seem to get the energy to figure out how to utalize my thumb... but everything else you guys have suggested is pretty spot on, that's how i do it anyways.

tadder, thanx for your tip about the thumb on the 1. i seem to be able to do it just fine. its more comfortable than moving my index back and forth like i used to.

btw, do you guys use a pick for this song. ive only been playin guitar a short while and i was never really comfortable with using one. i usually dont use one for any song i try to play. would you recommend using a pick for this song?

it's all personal preference, sometimes i play it with a pick sometimes i don't. if you pick it, what i recommend is to pick the first note then do a quick down-up strum then pick the note in the next chord, down-up, then strum the next one's regularly. it's easier to pick because you have to finger-pick fairly quickly, but you can get it to sound good either way.
