Are Bm and D major the same, too? I always wondered that. Dave claims that crush, for example, was a new step for the band because it is in drop-D, but is written in Bm instead of most drop-D songs, which are in D. Could that be just a come-on?

ok since the song is in em, or g which i knew...does that mean that the Em pentatonic is the same as the G major pentatonic.

you are exactly right, Em pentatonic is the same as G major pentatonic. the notes are all the same, if you knew the scale in every position all the way up the neck, you could easily see thisAppsoldier wrote:ok since the song is in em, or g which i knew...does that mean that the Em pentatonic is the same as the G major pentatonic.

i do know it all the way up, but ive never payed attn to the notes, just to the finger postitions. so i can use the pentatonic anywhere on my guitar to any song in any key, just never payed attn to the actual notes. im kinda good at that theory stuff, you know, learning patterns.
its the chord progression theories that i have problems w/. i wanna write cool stuff, stuff that sounds good, not basic major and minor chord progressions. that's where i get totally lost

As of right now, I do not really like any of you who understand music theory. This stems from my ignorance as to understanding music theory. If any of you would like to explain what a key is or anything pertinent to this theory, I would greatly appreciate it. Honestly, massive kudos to those who understand any part of that stuff.

im not as good as it as fatjack is...as a matter of fact i suck at it. but i understand this, and i think all musicians should. every song is in a key. the key of a song basically tells you what chords and notes can be played in that song. if you've ever been playing and hit the wrong chord or note and it sounds terrible, its because that chord or note wasn't in the key of the song that you were playing. the easiest example is the key of C major. it consists of the NOTES C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. most others include flats and sharps.
now for ever major key, there is a relative minor key. that's why Em is the same as G major and Bm is the same as D major. C major's relative minor i think is A minor. therefore all the NOTES included in the key of A minor are also C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.
that's very basic, what i did was went out and bought a book called "The Complete Guitarist" its way too advanced for me, but it shows good patterns for all the keys and a lot of different scales. This way i can jam or improv to any song in any key.
if i were you, id start looking on the internet and trying to learn as much as you can, also ask for more help from people on the board that are better at this stuff than i am. cause it can help you and make you look like you know what you are talking about
