So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Alright.. it's killing me.
The tab says this:
Code: Select all
E:-------------------------
B:-------------------------
G:-----2-------------------
D:---------3---5-5--2-3-2--
A:-5-----------------------
E:-------------------------
But I hear this:
Code: Select all
E:-----------------------
B:-----------------------
G:-----2-----------------
D:---------3---5-5--2-3--
A:-5---------------------
E:-----------------------
I can only get it right if I leave that last note out. I think it sounds right when I play it that way. What do you guys play? Is there anything you can tell me from experience? This is really boggling my mind..

yeah, to me, the last note is actually the first note, you just don't play it the first time. i leave a bigger pause between the second last and the last note than i do between the last and the first note.

when you're talking about 'second last' and 'last note', do you mean the way
you play it?
EDIT: When you play along with Dave, is the timing right?

Code: Select all
E -3-
A -1-
D -x-
G -3-
B ---
e ---
chord.

when i'm talking about the second and last notes, i mean the way the tab is written on this site. the first way, on your initial post.
and yes, the timing's right when i play along with dave. he plays that note a lot softer than the others, so it's not as noticeable.

EDIT: i've also had trouble breaking my habit of playing 5 2 3 55
5 232

i'm surprised to hear that some prefer (or simply find it less diffidcult) to Not play the last note of this bit. i don't think it sounds right at all, even if you still keep the song on-rhythm. it just doesn't sound nearly as good to abbreviate it.
that's just 'shortcut' talk, in my opinion.
god knows it weighs on me...as heavy as stone and a bone-chilling cold

I agree with mattm and granny. You need that last note in there.

indeed. i'm at that point where i'm trying to eliminate any shortcuts in my dave playin. but i do like to mix it up. i listen mostly to dave&tim 99 & 03, and dave does variations that i love. but i try not to play anything shorthand. 8)
oh yeah granny?? ya know the M's have won like 14 of the last 17 at yankee stadium over the past four years. (i always love throwin that one out there). but, the M's just gave up 1st place in the ALWest for the first time since april 12, to the A's of course. and boston may grab the wildcard.
but it's all good if i'm playin well

I agree, if you take shortcuts, how are you gonna become a better dave player?
