So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

How important is it that the D string is not hit?

E----------------------
B----------------------
G-11----11-----6------4
D-7-----7------x------x
A-9-----9------4------2
E-10----10----/5----5\3

How is it muted? With the 3rd finger?

Same question applies to next bit, (G string).

E---------------------0----3----3--------------3--
B-8----8----7----3----0----3----3----2----3----3--
G -x----x----x----x----x----x----2----2----2----0--
D-5----x----4----4----2----2----2----2----x----0--
A-7----7----5----5----2----2--------------x----2--
E------5---------3------------------------2----3--

Are you using your first finger to lightly bar the fret then?

No you just lay that finger litely over that string.

Gianni, that's just a physical impossibility. My first finger's on the fifth fret busy pressing on the D string.

No, you have to lay it over the string while your pressing down the other string. Watch my video of it.

Yeah, watching the vids is how I learned to play it correctly. It was a great help. Thanks again, Gianni...

You have to angle your first finger so that it's just lightly touching the G string.

I know...it's not too bad after awhile. He uses that chord in a few songs. My hand angle is a little different than yours. I wish I could post pics or I would show you. I noticed that you fret the D string with the side of your finger. Try fretting it 'head on' with your finger straight if that makes sense. It makes it easier to mute that G.
