what bands did you grow up listening to?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Well, let's see. My musical background in terms of what I have listened to is more than a little strange, as I lived in Costa Rica from when I was 10 till 18. Those are the years that one REALLY gets into music and cd's and all that jazz, and in Costa Rica you are exposed to VERY different music. Anyway, I'll start at the beginning. I've played classical piano since I was four, and that has undoubtedly left an impression on me. When you've got Beethoveen and Bach pouring through your fingers, you can't help but be affected by their genius. My first serious foray into more popular contemporary music was a band called Jars of Clay. They are absolutely stunning. Their first ablum was totally acoustic, and it's what I first heard. They have definitely influenced my sound. I taught myself to play the guitar by playing along with James Taylor and Clapton's Unplugged, and love fingerstyle stuff. Because of living in Costa Rica, I got into a Mexican rock band called Mana. Great stuff. Awesome blending of Latin beats and influences with rock guitars. Great melodies and messages. Another band that I absolutely love is Caedmon's Call. They are sort of an agressive acoustic rock band, but with country and bluegrass influences, that gives them a very classy style. (Note: I hate country, but if done well, it can definitely provide wonderful flair for the music. Popular radio country sucks. These guys have nothing to do with that.) Another favorite band is a group called Third Day. Just good old rock n roll fun with these guys. And the vocals are stunning. Mac Powell (lead singer) has one of the greatest sets of pipes on the planet. By about 17 I was introduced to both Dave and Pearl Jam, and love both. Current musical favorites also include Radio Head, Ben Folds, U2, Sunny Day Real Estate, Jennifer Knapp, and Miranda Stone. I also love good Latin music. There is absolutelt NOTHING like it.

Growing up I was into Everclear, Live, Nine Inch Nails, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.Everclear used to rock back in the day, now they've been reduced to MTV whores. Live used to be really good, too, but I didn't like the new album. I tried to get into it and it had a couple good songs but it's not as good as their other stuff. Red Hot Chili Peppers have mellowed out quite a bit but they're still pretty good, and Nine Inch Nails is still as bad-ass as always.

I've only been into Dave for the past few years. I knew he existed when I was growing up and I liked the songs that I'd heard, but I only started going to shows and buying albums about 2 years ago.

As much as I hate the eighties i have to admit that the police was the first band i ever went fanatical about. I then meandered listlessly through early nineties radio not really finding anything i liked. i had heard the dave matthews band and i liked some of their music at first, but then it got way overplayed and stopped liking them until i was introduce to my first non radio dave song two step, then i was hooked. So i guess it goes...

The Police
Dave Matthews
Plus all the other random radio stuff
